Steve,
   I found a good source for mouse swithes (and - it seems - for other Mac
parts).  Try Soft Solutions at 907 River Road, Suite 98, Eugene, OR
97404-3228.  Phone [phone].  Fax [phone].
   For mouse switches they offer 3 types:
(1) the "original and Lisa switch"
(2) "sub-miniature ADB switch"
(3) "sub-sub-miniature ADB switch"
for $6 each.  (Cheaper if you buy more.)
   The sub-miniature switch is approx. 2cm long, 0.6cm wide, and 1cm high.
The sub-sub-miniature switch is approx. 1.3cm long, 0.6cm high, and 0.6cm
wide.  I dunno the size of the Lisa switch.
   You can buy the switches individually (I ordered one each of the two ADB
types since I wasn't sure which I needed), or for $35 they'll sell you a kit
of 2 Lisa switches, 10 ADB switches, plus documentation on switch
specifications for every mouse variation.  The kit might be useful for
computer labs.
   They also seem to offer a good selection of other hard-to-find Macintosh
parts.  They'll send a list of what they offer if you ask.

Dear Elliot,

In one of the previous postings to info-mac, someone mentioned a switch
manufactured by Cherry as an appropriate replacement for the Apple mouse
switch.  I bought ten of these from Digi-Key Corp (they have a $25 minimum
order requirement) and they seem to work fine.  I can't vouch for their
longevity, but at about $1.25, I don't care if they don't last as long as the
genuine article.

The Digi-Key part number is CH167-ND, while the Cherry part number is
DG2C-B1AA.  Digi-Key says they can ship foreign orders, with an extra $5.00
charge.

This may be one of many replies, but here goes.

The original switches were made by Omron. A replacement, also from Omron, is
part no. D2F-01L.

This part number is for a switch identical to the original, except it has an
actuator lever, which is unnecessary in this application. I just remove the
lever and throw it away.

Have your local Omron distributor look in the catalog for the part no. for the
same switch without the lever. (I'd mention the part no., but I can't find the
catalog.) Failing that, order the same part no. and remove the lever.

It may be possible to cross the part no. to a switch from a different
manufacturer; check with the local distributors of electronic parts.

Once you get the switches, be sure to follow the correct procedures for repair
of ESD sensitive equipment when replacing the switch. Otherwise, you're asking
for future grief when the static damaged ADB interface chip in the mouse dies.
(Or worse, becomes intermittent.)

I can provide explicit instructions for switch replacement if required.

Regarding the question of replacement switches for the Apple mouses (mice?):

It is true that the Omron D2F switch (Allied stock number 829-4001) will
replace the Apple mouse switch.  However, the word I have is that this part
is not quite identical in specs, since the contacts are silver and may not
give quite as reliable a connection.  The Apple part has gold contacts, but
naturally is proprietary and Omron will not sell it to us.  However, there
is switch D2F-01L which becomes exactly the same as the Apple part if you
pop off the external lever.  Allied can sell this part if requested, and I
was quoted $1.10 each (still with a $25 minimum).

Try Allied Electronics.  I don't have a phone number, but I think you can
get it through 800 directory assistance (800-555-1212).

The part number for the switch is 829-4001 and they cost ~$1 a piece.  Allied
has a $25 minimum order, but if you need 22 switches, you won't be far off.

Subject: Replacement Mouse Switch that WORKS!

Dear Netters:
   After a prolonged search and some dead ends, I have found a source for
the mouse replacement switch that many of us have been looking for.
   The switch is a Cherry DG1C-B1AA.  I ordered 10 from Digi-Key (1-800-
DIGIKEY) for $25.68.  The DIGI-KEY partt number is CH164-ND. This is different
than the one listed in an earlier positing (it was not the right part).
DIGI-KEY has a $25.00 minimum order so if you just want one you might get
their catalog and see if you want anything else.

Subject: Microswitch fixed in Apple Mouse

My Apple mouse (serial # LT11072...) died a couple of months ago---NO clicking
Our technician  was able to find a replacement micro-switch here in Atlanta.
Cost was ONLY $3.18 including tax.
He sent the following msg to me:

   I got the replacement from Ack Industrial Electronics (be ready to give them
   the numbers off of the switch).  Their phone number is 1-800-282-7954 or
   [phone] in Atlanta, Ga.

   They may have a minimum purchase amount, but it is no more than $25.  I think   it may on
ly be $5.00.
